Measurement of Hippocampal Volume Changes in Serial MRI Scans

چکیده
We present a new method for the detection and measurement of volume changes in human hippocampi in serial Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The method follows a two-stage approach: (1) precise co-registration and intensity matching of the initial (baseline) and follow-up scan, and (2) refinement and segmentation propagation of the hippocampi outlines drawn in the baseline scan by an expert observer to the matched scan (co-registered and intensity matched follow-up scan of the time series). The first step is performed using MRreg, a rigid registration tool based on cross-correlation and intensity matching, and the second step makes use of the concept of active contour models for tracking the hippocampi outlines in the time series.

Automated Hippocampal Segmentation by Regional Fluid Registration of Serial MRI: Validation and Application in Alzheimer's Disease
The application of voxel-level three-dimensional registration to serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is described. This fluid registration determines deformation fields modeling brain change, which are consistent with a model describing a viscous fluid. The objective was to validate the measurement of hippocampal volumetric change by fluid registration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) against cu...
متن کاملDynamic mapping of hippocampal development in childhood onset schizophrenia.
Prior cross-sectional anatomic brain imaging studies of the hippocampus in schizophrenia have generally shown loss in total hippocampal volume although the progressive course of these changes remains unknown. We report the first prospective sub-regional maps of hippocampal development in childhood onset schizophrenia (COS), reconstructed from serial brain MRI scans of 29 children with COS scann...
متن کاملMapping hippocampal and ventricular change in Alzheimer disease.
We developed an anatomical mapping technique to detect hippocampal and ventricular changes in Alzheimer disease (AD). The resulting maps are sensitive to longitudinal changes in brain structure as the disease progresses. An anatomical surface modeling approach was combined with surface-based statistics to visualize the region and rate of atrophy in serial MRI scans and isolate where these chang...
متن کاملNeuronal correlates of serial position performance in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.
OBJECTIVES Delayed recall of the first words of a list-the primacy position-is thought to be particularly dependent on intact memory consolidation. Hippocampal volume has been suggested as the primary neuronal correlate of delayed primacy recall in cognitively normal elderly individuals. Here, we studied the association of hippocampal volume with primacy recall in individuals with amnestic mild...
متن کاملAutomated segmentation of hippocampal subfields from ultra-high resolution in vivo MRI.
Recent developments in MRI data acquisition technology are starting to yield images that show anatomical features of the hippocampal formation at an unprecedented level of detail, providing the basis for hippocampal subfield measurement. However, a fundamental bottleneck in MRI studies of the hippocampus at the subfield level is that they currently depend on manual segmentation, a laborious pro...
